Judge’s Comment
MSC Website
“The product presents with crystal clarity and a bold structure that expresses surprising aromatic intensity, alternating floral notes of jasmine and violet with fruity hints of peach and forest fruits. On the palate, it reveals a layered complexity where the sweetness is well-balanced by a warm and vibrant alcohol component, culminating in an exceptional persistence that exceeds expectations for the Imo Shochu category. Compared to the typical profile, this label stands out for a modern cleanliness and an aromatic finesse that leans toward the vacuum-distilled style, while maintaining a full-bodied and rich structure that enhances its drinkability. The overall assessment is decidedly positive, outlining a harmonious spirit capable of evolving from a subtle nose to an explosive and deep palate. The product’s identity is reinforced by clear references to sweet potato and fresh citrusy and spicy hints of white pepper, enriched by lactic nuances and dried fruit that confirm its elegance. Descriptors of peach, apricot, and toasted notes underline excellent versatility, ideal both for neat consumption and for mixing with soda or water.”

Judge’s Comment
MSC Website
“This barrel-aged sweet potato shochu is distinguished by a complex and layered aromatic profile, where notes of wood, smoke, and toasted grains blend harmoniously with the characteristic scents of the raw material. The majority of the judges appreciated the balance between the alcoholic strength and the richness of the texture, describing it as a structured, warm product with remarkable persistence. Compared to the typical profile of the category, the influence of the barrel elevates its traditional character toward a more international dimension reminiscent of whisky, while maintaining a highly appreciated recognizability of the base ingredient. The descriptive labels highlight a bouquet rich in dried flowers, chamomile, and sweet spices, supported on the palate by sensations of hazelnut, honey, and a pleasant smoky note that confirms its sophisticated identity. These characteristics, combined with a structure often defined as silky and full-bodied, make the product ideal for drinking neat or on the rocks, perfectly accompanying savory dishes, cheeses, or moments of meditation.”
