History and Awards

Seeking to make wine that takes advantage of the rich Japanese climate with its four seasons, Hombo Shuzo began making wine in Yamanashi in 1960.
Mars Wine, which has a history of more than half a century based on the theme of “harmony of mellow flavor and elegant fragrance,” has received high acclaim both in Japan and abroad, including the first gold medal at the Japan Wine Competition for the Koshu variety and European red grape variety grown in Yamanashi Prefecture. The wine has received high acclaim both domestically and internationally.

More than half a century of history and numerous awards

Yamanashi Terroir

The personality of a wine is shaped by the terroir, grapes, human involvement, and the passage of time. The grapes for the Chateau Mars series are grown in the Hosaka (Nirasaki City), Shirane (Minami-Alps City), Ishiwa and Misaka (Fuefuki City), and Makioka (Yamanashi City) areas.
The characteristics of the region are determined by “terroir,” the natural components of the climate (temperature, precipitation), amount of sunlight (sunshine area), topography (altitude, slope), and soil (geology, water quality), which cannot be greatly influenced by human power.

Yamanashi Terroir
Hosaka Area

Located at the foot of the vast Kayatake Mountains rising from the northwestern corner of the triangular-shaped Kofu Basin, it is Yamanashi Prefecture's representative production area for vinification grapes. The southwestern slopes of the mountain, which are 400 to 700 meters above sea level, belong to a cool climate zone with long hours of sunshine and little rainfall. Grapes grown in this natural environment have a “high concentration” and “firm” flavor due to the winds blowing at the foot of the mountain and the slightly viscous soil

Shirane Area

Located in the western part of the Kofu Basin, the fan-shaped area created by the flooding of the Midaigawa River, which originates in the Southern Alps, has a mixture of sandy gravel and clay soil, forming a well-drained sloping layer. It is said that “Hara Nanago also burns in the moonlit night. The unique dry soil and the difference in temperature between day and night produce grapes with a、“delicious flavor and firmness”.

Isawa Area

The Fuefuki-gawa River, which originates in the Chichibu Mountains in the eastern part of the Kofu Basin, deposits well-drained sandy-gravel soils that form the fruit-growing region. The warm climate during the growing season makes the grapes“highly ripe” and “aromatic” with “soft flavor and sweetness”.

Misaka Area

The gently sloping Kanegawa fan-shaped area in the eastern part of the Kofu Basin, with the Misaka massif behind it, has fertile sandy-gravelly and clayey soil, and forms one of the best fruit-growing areas in Japan. The grapes grown here have“high ripeness,” “soft acidity,” and “rich fruitiness."

Makioka Area

A steeply sloping hilly area located northeast of the Kofu Basin. Overlooking the Fuefukigawa River, which originates from the Chichibu Mountains at an elevation of approximately 700 meters, the area is formed by clayey soil containing many large pebbles. The long hours of sunlight and the temperature difference between day and night nurture grapes with“high acidity” and “rich minerality."
