MARS MALT Le Papillon Single Cask Kumomatsumaki-cho
Single Cask Release (643 Bottles)
"MARS MALT Le Papillon" is a series that captures the splendor of Japan's natural environment and its four distinct seasons—which shape our whisky's maturation—through the motif of butterflies native to Japan.
This expression is themed after the "Kumomatsumakicho" (Japanese Orange Tip), a small alpine butterfly inhabiting only the high mountain ranges of the Chubu region.
Distinguished by the vivid orange tips of its forewings, it is a beautiful, solitary figure. Imagining this solitary beauty, we selected a single cask of malt whisky matured in a Sherry butt.
Distilled at Mars Komagatake Distillery (formerly Mars Shinshu Distillery) in 2015, this single cask single malt whisky is bottled at natural cask strength, non-chill filtered.
"The Kumomatsumakicho, inhabiting only the high mountains of the Chubu region, is a solitary beauty and a prize admired by every insect-loving boy. My first encounter was on May 17, 1972. As a high school student, a friend and I headed to Hirogawara, in the upper reaches of the Noro River in the Southern Alps. The 32-kilometer round trip from the trailhead at Yashajin Pass took us 10 hours. Working backward from our schedule, we had only about 30 minutes to spend at Hirogawara. Exhausted, I sat by the mountain stream, and suddenly, an orange butterfly flew towards me, as if to welcome my arrival."
