MARS MALT Le Papillon Single Cask Nagasaki-ageha
Single Cask Release (621 Bottles)
"MARS MALT Le Papillon" is a series that captures the splendor of Japan's natural environment and its four distinct seasons—which shape our whisky's maturation—through the motif of butterflies native to Japan.
This expression is themed after the "Nagasakiageha" (Great Mormon), a large butterfly first collected by Siebold in Nagasaki.
The cask selection was inspired by the image of a female butterfly with white wings, often seen visiting hibiscus flowers in Japan's southern islands.
Distilled at Mars Tsunuki Distillery in 2019, this single cask single malt whisky was matured in a Sherry cask at the Mars Yakushima Aging Cellar. It is bottled at natural cask strength, non-chill filtered.
"When I was a child, the Nagasakiageha was a butterfly found only in warm regions—a species I always longed to see. Now, perhaps due to global warming, it even visits the garden of my home in northern Kanto. However, the Nagasakiageha seen in the Kanto region are almost completely black in both males and females, with only a slight white spot on the hindwings of the females. Interestingly, this white spot tends to grow larger, and the wings become whiter, the further south you go. On some islands in the southwestern archipelago, you can see the beautiful Nagasakiageha flying with wings completely whitened, as shown on this label."
