History & Aspirations

150 Years of Heritage and Aspiration

Founded in 1872, Hombo Shuzo started as a cotton business in Minami Satsuma.
The company’s journey into shochu production commenced in 1909. For over a century, we have been dedicated to crafting spirits in our birthplace. Today, our brewing endeavors have expanded to Kagoshima, Yamanashi, and Nagano prefectures. In each locale, we honor the unique climate and culture, perpetuating our founding spirit of regional integration.

Spirit

Continuing the Spirit of Our Founding

Hombo Shuzo originated from Hombo General Partnership, established by seven brothers. The guiding principle, “Brothers are like the two hands,” left by Matsuzaemon Hombo, unified their wisdom and strength, rooted in a profound love for their homeland, to realize their business aspirations.

Under the family precept of “cooperation and unity,” each brother diligently contributed to industrial development in their respective roles.

This strong familial solidarity became the driving force behind the company’s growth.

Technique

Passing on the essence and passion from one person to another

At Hombo Shuzo, brewing takes place in three regions: Kagoshima, Yamanashi, and Nagano.

We have always esteemed traditional techniques.

Our artisans, deeply familiar with the local water and climate, have passed down their skills through generations. This passion continues to thrive today.

Facing a New Era with Determination

Inheriting and Innovating
Regional Culture

Kagoshima’s regional culture of Imo shochu is now also known as Satsuma shochu, and has come to be protected and evaluated under the global standard of the TRIPS Agreement on Geographical Indications (GI).

Hombo Shuzo has inherited the traditions from the era when it was called “old-style shochu” and has innovated to create shochu suited to the new era known as “Honkaku shochu”.

Hombo Shuzo pursues its unique approach to liquor brewing, not only for shochu, Japan’s national liquor, but also for Honkaku umeshu(plum wine), Japanese wine, and Japanese whisky, all with an eye toward the new era.
